As we were talking about the parables in Matthew 13 in my New Testament class, I was struck by the two parables mirrored next to each other in verses 44-46 and by the significant changing of roles of the kingdom of heaven: the first parable compares it to a treasure hidden in the field and that a man will give up everything in his life in order to obtain it. The next parable appears to be the same basic story, yet here we find the kingdom of heaven being compared to a merchant man seeking out goodly pearls and finds a pearl of great price, giving up everything for it. What is the meaning of this pearl? What is the kingdom of heaven searching for? Us! We know from Moses 1:39 that our salvation is everything that the Lord spends His time doing, everything that brings Him happiness. We are His pearls and He would (and did) give everything for us. Aw.
